Piraeus is a port city in the Attica region of Greece. It is located eight kilometres southwest of Athens’, along the east coast of the Saronic Gulf. The port of Piraeus is the chief port in Greece, the 5th largest passenger port in Europe and the 24th largest passenger port in the world.
Though Athens is only 8 kilometres from the port it takes close to an hour to get there by bus. As we had been to Athens before to visit the Acropolis we decided to stay in the port city of Piraeus and explore. Again, like each of the cities we have visited in Europe this cruise it had a beautiful promenade that took us along the coast. Our first stop was a small local beach with many people swimming, fishing and spear-fishing so we decided we would head down to put our feet in the water – wow are the greeks are tough – the water was freezing!

Like many of the promenades this one had many restaurants along it, though they were more active with locals than the other ports. As we passed the restaurants were noticed things hanging outside a few. On closer inspection we found that where typical restaurants post a menu – these seemed to hang the main meal so everyone could see!

We were glad to be walking along the coast as a quick glance up some of the streets showed roads that looked like the streets in San Francisco – very steep and narrow.
Piraeus reminded us of Montenegro as there were so many stray cats being well looked after by the local people. Everywhere there were little houses made and food and water put out. Who wouldn’t want to be a cat in this town.

At the end of the promenade, or at least where we decided to turn around, we came upon this incredible marina with the most amazing looking yachts. One was so long it hung out of the slip it was in. Brian looked it up and we found that it was only a mere $1 Million a week to rent it. Anyone in?

We enjoyed our walk today in Piraeus – it was definitely a lot less crowded than Athens would have been and we got a good look at some of the local and non-local living.

Thanks for the photos! The weather looks great for you…maybe the big 1M/rental yacht will have a black Friday rental fee??
All the best,
Whynn
