Day 8 – Biking Adventures

Today Gary, Pam, Brian and I set out for a bike tour that would take us along Playas del Coco, Playa Ocatal and then through the local areas of Coco. Kia went for her manicure.

Dillion and Robert were our guides. After some instruction on how to use the e-bikes we were off. We took the back dirt roads to the beach and then drove up and down it a few times getting used to the bikes. From there we crossed the small estuary and started our drive to Playa Ocotal.

Along the way Robert pointed out different trees and told us of some of the Costa Rican history.

Playa Ocotal is a small grey sandy beach enclosed by hills on both sides with gentle waves. It also carries a “Blue Flag” signifying that it is one of the cleanest beaches. Robert told us that several years ago he participated in a project to clean the land and waters of Costa Rica. He was one of the scuba divers that pulled out all of the garbage that had been dumped for years into the ocean.

From Playa Ocotal we continued our ride to a resort located high in the hills. Here we stopped to have some water and a quick snack of pineapple and mango before making the steep descent to Playa Azul. All of us walked down except for Gary who rode it both ways 🙂

Back at the top we mounted our bikes and started our return to the bike shop. On the way back Robert detoured us through the back streets of Coco. It was interesting to see the local housing, schools and shops.

Our ride ended with a drink of cold coconut water from a small street vendor.
