Today was a beach exploring day. We hopped in the car and went to visit Playa Panama, Arenilla and Bonita. Today was very windy so the water was very rough at Playa Panama. To get to Playa Arenilla we had to go through the posh SECRETS resort – $640 US a night – ouch! This beach was smaller than the others and to get to the far end we had to walk in the water around some rocks. To get to Playa Bonita we had to descend very steep slopes. The first part of the slope had some steps that were bordered by barbwire on both sides, the second and third steep areas had black cable to assist your descent. The beach was beautiful and very isolated – well worth the challenge. Playa Bonita was the nicest of the three beaches.

On the way home we took the local route which provided us with some great vistas of the Bay of Hermosa.

Again today we saw lots of wildlife – hermit crabs, black vultures, paraquetes – and a kumquat tree loaded with tons of ripe fruit – yum!

Your photos and stories are awesome. Looks like you’re having a great time and gathering a lot of knowledge along the way. 👍

why was there barbed wire? To keep animals off the area?

In Costa Rica access to the beach must be provided. We believe that the proprietors on both sides of the path wanted to make sure that people did not trespass on their property when accessing the beach.

I think the barbed wire was to keep people from trespasses on local’s land.
