Today we decided to visit Pompei and drive the Amalfi coast back to Scala. The drive to Pompei, 14 km from Scala, took us over an hour due to the mountain roads winding up and down and delays caused by fearless goats.
Pompei is a city in southern Italy’s Campania region overlooked by the active volcano on Mt. Vesuvius. It’s known for its ancient city, which was buried by the 79 A.D. eruption of Mt Vesuvius.
Pompeii supported between 10,000 and 20,000 inhabitants at the time of its destruction. The ruins at Pompeii were first discovered late in the 16th century. Excavation started in 1748 and is still ongoing today. Many parts of the village have been uncovered, most notable for me were the amphitheatre, the cathedral, the spa area and the taverns. It was easy to see the community in this large village. The architecture and engineering was amazing.
While in the amphitheatre it started to rain and the thunder rang through the theatre. It was a fabulous place to hear the storm.
To return home we followed the coastline stopping at Sorrento and Positano. The coastline road was a windy, narrow road high above the ocean which afforded us great views of the towns way below the road.
Sorrento overlooks the Bay of Naples and is a popular tourist destination. It was fairly busy when we arrived and finding a parking spot was a little difficult. Once parked we found a nice little restaurant in a main square and shared a magherita pizza.
Limoncello, made from lemon rinds, alcohol, water and sugar, is produced in Sorrento.
Positano is a village located mainly in an enclave in the hills leading down to the coast. It was impossible to find parking in this busy little village so we observed as we drove through it.
